Lilies

Site Requirements

Lilies prefer to grow in neutral to slightly acidic soils.

Lily bulbs should never dry out but they do need a free draining soil to let excess moisture drain away.

They like a semi shaded situation, or dappled sunlight and give them plenty of moisture in hot dry spells.

Taller varieties will need staking

Re-plant bulbs immediately after lifting – do not let bulbs dry out.

Where to Plant

Lilies can either be planted in the garden or in pots and containers.

When planting in the garden make sure to provide a fertile, free draining soil. The addition of pumice sand or grit at the base of the planting hole will assist with this if you have heavy soil.

In pots always use a good quality potting mix like Daltons Bulb mix or Tub mix

In the garden Tui bulb food should be applied at planting time. Once plants emerge liquid feed with ican Fast Food at two weekly intervals.

In pots it is best to use a slow release fertiliser such as Novatec or ican Slow food to promote flowers. Bulb food is not always suitable for containers so please check the instructions before applying.

When to Plant

Lilies are purchased as bulbs and planted early to mid-autumn.

After purchase, plant Lily bulbs as soon as possible to reduce the risk of the bulbs drying out in the small bags they are sold in.

Uses

Lilies can be used successfully in the following situations:-

In garden borders

In pots and containers

Lilies grow happily in sun to part shade

Woodland themed gardens

Decks and patios

Conservatories and glasshouses

 Warning

Lily pollen stains are indelible - you won’t get them out of fabric.

If you are cutting them to put in a vase take a moment once they are fully opened to remove the pollen heads to avoid any issues.

The scent of a lily is in the stamens. If you are intolerant, simply remove the stamens that hold the pollen and you will remove the scent.

After Care

Feeding

Lilies require feeding.

Use a balanced fertiliser such as Tui bulb food or Novatec.

Feed Lilies in early spring when new growth appears and again after flowering for the bulb to store for next years flowers.

Water in well.
